I have a handful of Evans photographs of unknown people, most of which I probably have no chance of identifying. This one, however, is just daring me to try to find her name. From the inscription, we know that this is Marjorie, but either she didn't add her last name or it has been cut off from a subsequent trimming. To make things more interesting, the person to whom the photo was inscribed is identifiable. Rita Weiman was a playwright and scenario writer, so that should be a major clue as to Marjorie's identity. However, a check of admittedly incomplete cast lists of the films Ms. Weiman was involved with around this time (1919-1922) shows no Marjories. So who is this young lady? If anyone has any idea, please let me know.
This image is none other than Susan Sarandon, probably made on very old photographic print paper of the 1920's era, which there is still some around or could be just a modern print made from a photoshop file, with Nelson Evans markings added. Maybe you could find all the old photos of Miss Sarandon, you might just find it. As a photographer of over 45 years, I spotted who this person was instantly. This is why you have not been able to find the actress of that era, as she never existed, not then at any rate. The eyes are usually a dead giveaway, but in this photo they are so soft that a perfect ID is not likely.
ReplyDeleteNo, it's a genuine photo from the 20s. Probably an aspiring actress whose name is lost to time.
